These levels are backed up by great graphical detail, though the occasional glitch on PC does creep in. The Mexico and and Jan Mayen island chapters offer some great climbing puzzles mixed in with Lara's motorbike, giving a glimpse of where the franchise could have gone if it hadn't been rebooted in 2013. Tomb Raider: Underworld is a competent if anti-climatic finale to the second phase of Tomb Raider, a shame as several levels and scenarios are very well made, massively upping the scale from both Legend and Anniversary. Overall, a good game with 7 or 8 out of ten. None of the tomb raider games are captivating anyway with their plots, and I think this game's story is overly dramatic, much like the music. QTE's have been replaced with moments where time slows down and you have to think fast. Game-play wise, they can be ok, but the textures of the surroundings are so dull and everything looks similar. And then the later half of the game's levels range from ok to poor. I don't know if I like the lack of proper boss fights though. From the Mediterranean Sea, a vast beginning level with a really well done sinking ship part (where the walls eventually shift to become the floors), to the third or so level where she goes to Southern Mexico is the best bits of the game. The game's levels start off pretty great. Even though Lara can equip a secondary weapon throughout the levels, she can't gain ammo for them. Also, the combat leaves a lot to be desired- there is no shooting gimmick that is good, it has been replaced by a simple time-runs-slower special. She transitions between poses a bit too fast and inhuman. Also, why does it centre on Lara's butt when she runs? Animations in this game are more realistic than the previous games, but they do not blend together very well. As much as I like the game, it can be frustrating for the game camera to shift very snappy. Love it.īut this game is the jankiest and wonkiest in the Legend trilogy. And of course, unnecessary acrobats like handstands when climbing a short ledge. She can also shoot underwater and I especially liked the underwater levels. Lara's combat variety improved she can now shoot two enemies at once and even on a ledge/wall. I also really liked the details in how she moved, stumbling a little when she fell from an awkward angle for example. I loved the new ways to platform, like wall to wall jumping, or wall hugging. The levels and their designs were so adventurous, except the final level. Underworld was phenomenal in its game-play and how Lara moved around. This is the last good tomb raider game, or at least the last tomb raider game that felt like a tomb raider as of 2023.
